The Making Of Liquid Swords

I represent from midnight to high noon / I don't waste ink, nigga I think / I drop megaton bombs more faster than you blink." —GZA, Liquid Swords.

It was clear. It was fresh," replied GZA, when asked how his head was while making Liquid Swords. "We were on a roll, and it was the perfect time to get in the studio and just do it."
The year was '95 and the first generation of Wu-Tang solo projects was gripping fans globally. And for his part, GZA never did waste ink and has shown a penchant for writing since Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) and his debut, Words From The Genius. Even in a year of memorable releases, Liquid Swords' rhymes coupled with RZA's cinematic beats stood tall, furthering Wu-Tang's dominance to this day.
Thirteen years later, Liquid Swords continues to age well and is a stellar case of quality '90s hip-hop. Here for the first time ever, GZA talks about the making of the heralded classic, breaking down the album track-by-track and allowing insight into vital era in which it was made.

Ernie Barnes Dies

Damn, this dude will be forever the truth!!!

Acclaimed artist Ernie Barnes, best known for his unique figurative style of painting and whose work was immortalized on classic television and album covers, died last night, according to reports. He was 70 years old.

According to his official biography, Barnes was born July 15, 1938 to Ernest Sr. and Fannie Mae Geer Barnes during the Jim Crow era in Durham, North Carolina. As a child, young Ernest would accompany her to work and was allowed to peruse the extensive collection of art books. One day in junior high school, a teacher found the self-admitted fat, introverted young Barnes drawing in a notebook while hiding from the bullies who taunted him daily.

For over 40 years, his art has been admired and collected internationally. His national traveling “Beauty of the Ghetto” exhibition in the 1970s featured some of his timeless works as “Storyteller,” “High Aspirations” and “The Graduate.” His famous 1971 “Sugar Shack” dance scene appeared on the “Good Times” television show and on the Marvin Gaye album, “I Want You.”

Hip Hop Appreciation Week MAY 17-24, 2009

The Temple Of Hiphop is pleased to announce that Hip Hop Appreciation Week 2009 is May 17-24 and the theme for this year is “COOPERATION”!

HHAW, always celebrated during the third week of May, is a time for Hiphoppas to de-criminalize the images of Hip Hop that are portrayed by the mainstream media.
Now is the time, more than ever, for COOPERATION in our communities. The Hip Hop community should work together to organize our people, our knowledge and our resources as we continue to work through the challenges we are facing domestically and globally! There are many ways in which Hiphoppas can demonstrate COOPERATION, here are a just few suggestions. During HHAW we encourage Hiphoppas to intentionally:

Ø Work with individuals and organizations that are working to make your community better.

Ø Use HHAW as an opportunity to end personal disputes with anyone that you have had challenges with.

Ø Volunteer with non-profit organizations, share your gifts and talents with your community, i.e. teach a class, mentor a youth, etc.

Ø Network, build new alliances, form coalitions and partnerships that are mutually beneficial.

Ø Become involved with a neighborhood watch group, community beautification committee, etc.

Ø Create artistic collaborations using the various elements of Hip Hop culture.

Ø Live, Teach and Promote the principles of the Hiphop Declaration Of Peace.

HHAW gives Hiphoppas a great opportunity to show the world who we are, whose we are and what we are here to do! Remember, we are not doing hip-hop, we are Hiphop, word!

T.G.I. Friday's joins the bargain dining $5-meal club

Heads gonna hit up the $5 steak sandwich before even thinking about the salads that's running for the same price. BET MONEY!!!

By Bruce Horovitz, USA TODAY

The recession that brought back $2 gasoline is about to bring back to casual dining another retro price point: $5 meals.

On Monday, T.G.I. Friday's — which, like most casual-dining chains, has taken a hit during the recession — will unveil plans to

sell all salads and sandwiches for $5 all day in May. The move follows a recent rollout by Chili's of 10 entrees for less than $7.

A $5 price tag at sit-down restaurants hasn't been seen in quite awhile. "It's a magic number," says Malcolm Knapp, a researcher who tracks the $75 billion casual-dining industry, which saw same-store sales drop 4.9% in March. The $5 meal, he says, "is affordable to everyone."

MINI BURGERS: In tough times, restaurants go smaller on price, size
DO YOU WANT FRIES WITH THAT? Workers pushing extra sales
RECLASSIFYING NECESSITIES: Recession changes views of what we really need

The question: Can Friday's afford it? A steak sandwich that usually fetches $11.75 will go for $5, as will a pecan-crusted chicken salad, normally $9.69. All are full-size portions. The chain hasn't had such low prices on its menu since it opened in 1965.

Friday's executives insist that beyond being a recession response, the $5 menu is a way to drum up interest in nine new salads and sandwiches. "The consumer needs something that gives them permission to experiment — and this is it," says Andrew Jordan, marketing chief at Friday's USA.

The move comes a year after Subway rolled out $5 foot-long subs, an industry game-changer viewed as one of fast-food's most successful promos. Friday's $5 move comes as consumers continue to abandon casual dining for cheaper spots such as Panera Bread, Wingstop and Subway.

The restaurant industry has seen same-store sales decline for nine consecutive months, with casual dining taking the biggest hit. While some chains project signs of better times ahead, most are still mired in the doldrums.

"The $5 threshold reinforces the idea of a deal," says Ravi Dhar, director of the Yale Center for Customer Insights. "That's the current consumer mindset."

Others with $5 meal deals:

• Subway. Since launching the $5 foot-long deal in 2008, Subway has posted double-digit same-store growth, says Tony Pace, marketing chief at the Subway Franchisee Advertising Fund Trust, the marketing arm of Subway. The move has been widely mimicked, including by Quiznos, which undercut the deal to $4.

While Friday's will lose money on $5 meals, Subway makes money on the subs, he says. "My guess is, they know some of their customers have migrated to us."

• Boston Market. Boston Market, which started promoting its $5 menu in August 2008, has made it the focal point of its menu boards, says Judy Cantrell, chief brand officer. In a recent survey, 90% of guests said it motivated them to come more often.

• Shoney's. When CEO David Davoudpour took over in 2007, he brought back the $4.99 breakfast bar. But $5 meals won't work in casual dining, he says. "When you sell for $5 what you should sell for $10, something's wrong."

Headaches and Insomnia Going Hand in Hand

This for my late night grinders right here

Headaches come with the territory these days. Any look at the news can give you one of the most common types around: the tension-type. But if you suffer from chronic tension headaches and resort to sleeping them off, you may want to listen up: a new study out of Rush University just emerged showing a behavioral link between these kinds of headaches and insomnia.

In other words, you could be worsening your headaches-and the quality of your sleep - by snoozing them off.

It's no surprise that one of the ways to treat a headache is to lie down and take a nap (assuming, of course, you have the luxury of napping in the middle of your day). But napping can also conflict with your nighttime sleep if it's not planned carefully. It also appears to incite a vicious cycle: 59 percent of those in the study with tension-type headaches complained of sleep problems as a trigger of those headaches.

It's the classic catch-22. Sleep to dull headache. Sleep to trigger headache.

Not fair? Well, there are some solutions to consider.

The first is treating the headache with other means, such as drugs like aspirin or ibuprofen. A little bit of caffeine can help, too (which can be found in headache meds like Excedrin). But the secret is to be mindful of your nighttime sleep schedule and avoid things that can disrupt your normal bedtime.

I've always advocated avoiding naps after 3:00 pm, and the same goes for caffeine, including those caffeine-rich headache medicines.

So what do you do if your head begins to pound in the late afternoon?

The late-day headache can be a monster. Sometimes they are simply the result of:

staring too long at the computer

losing all sense of good posture and straining your neck, upper back, and shoulders

forgetting to have a snack when your blood-sugar dives

not realizing you haven't had anything to drink in hours

letting the tensions of the day pile up in your head-literally.
For late-day headaches, why don't you try:

Take a 15 minute break from whatever you were doing. Go outside, breathe in some fresh air, and get your circulation going at a faster clip. You'd be amazed by what a little circulation can do.

Have a light snack and drink plenty of water.

Consider a brisk walk.

If you can work the headache out without resorting to pills, naps, or caffeine late in the day, you'll be able to sleep better at night and welcome a better-headache-free-day the next.

Nothing is more frustrating than a headache that won't go away... or chronic insomnia that has you perpetually on edge. The good news is acknowledging the link between the two can kill these two annoying beasts with one stone.

Sweet Dreams,

Out of the Bodega and Onto the Scene

Branding is a art that I love fam!!!

By BEN SISARIO

OUTSIDE a small ranch house in the Southern California desert on April 19, one of the satellite parties of the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival was reaching its midafternoon peak. The D.J. blared Lil Jon into the open air, the V.I.P.’s escaped the baking sun for shade, and the girls by the pool giggled as they tossed around a bright yellow beach ball marked with the logo for one of the party’s sponsors.

But unlike most of the 18 other brands on display here (Imeem, Vitaminwater) this one stood out: Café Bustelo, the old Cuban-style espresso. Around the pool, its retro-kitsch symbol was everywhere: on the empty cans of Bustelo Cool littering every table; on the burlap gift bags stamped with “I ♥ Café Bustelo”; and on the artfully ripped T-shirts on the models handing out coffee-and-vodka cocktails they call Dirty Bustelos.

For anyone who hasn’t been keeping an eye on beverage marketing, it was enough to draw a confused double-take. A decadent party at a prestigious rock festival is hardly what comes to mind when you think of Café Bustelo, whose plain yellow and red can has been a bodega standby for eight decades. Potent, cheap and with an aura of both urban exotica and blue-collar utility, it’s long been an item on the bohemian shopping list, even making it into the lyrics to “Rent” (“Bustelo, Marlboro, banana by the bunch”).

In the D.J. booth, Dominique Keegan, 37, alternated between puffs on a cigarette and praise for the coffee’s down-market perfection. “I live on Avenue C, and I go to the Essex market every day,” he said in a half-Irish, half-French accent. “I get my Bustelo coffee for like $2 a half-pound, and I live on that.”

But as if proof that every humble product will eventually get its upscale rebranding, Café Bustelo is in the midst of a makeover. As with Pabst Blue Ribbon and Hush Puppies before it, Bustelo’s appeal to the hipster demographic is being seized upon by a company eager to exploit its every last drop of cool. For the last two years, Bustelo has been a fixture at parties and giveaway suites from the Winter Music Conference to Sundance to the Oscars, and the company behind it has been sending truckloads of it to 50 Cent and Perez Hilton.

Whenever there is coolsploitation, however, there is potential trouble, and marketing experts say that Café Bustelo’s reboot will not be easy. For one, it has a loyal Hispanic customer base that it can’t afford to alienate. It also faces competition for that urbanite coffee dollar from Goliaths like Starbucks and Dunkin’ Donuts. And then there is the danger that Bustelo might not be as hip as its purveyor thinks it is.

“Every company tries to be a lifestyle brand now,” said Jonah Disend, the founder of Redscout, a brand strategy firm in New York. “Everybody comes in and goes to the cool places and thinks it will just work. But it can come off as very hollow.”

Swine flu: FAQ

What is swine influenza?

Swine influenza (swine flu) is caused by type A influenza virus and gives pigs the flu. Swine flu viruses cause regular outbreaks of flu in pigs but death is infrequent. The viruses may circulate among pigs throughout the year, but most outbreaks occur during the late fall and winter months similar to outbreaks in humans. The classical swine flu virus (an influenza type A H1N1 virus) was first isolated from a pig in 1930.

How many swine flu viruses are there?

Like all flu viruses, swine flu viruses change constantly. Pigs can be infected by avian, human and swine influenza viruses. When influenza viruses from different species infect pigs, the viruses can reassort and new ones emerge that are a mix of swine, human and/or avian influenza viruses. Over the years, different variations of swine flu viruses have emerged. Right now, there are four main influenza type A virus subtypes that have been isolated in pigs: H1N1, H1N2, H3N2, and H3N1. However, most of the recently isolated influenza viruses from pigs have been H1N1 viruses.

Can humans catch swine flu?

Swine flu viruses do not normally infect humans. However, sporadic human infections with swine flu have occurred. Most commonly, these cases occur in persons with direct exposure to pigs, such as children near pigs at a fair or workers in the swine industry.

There have been documented cases of one person spreading swine flu to others. In 1988, an outbreak of apparent swine flu infection in pigs in Wisconsin resulted in multiple human infections, and although no community outbreak resulted, there was antibody evidence of virus transmission from the patient to health care workers who had close contact with the patient.

How common is swine flu infection in humans?

In the past, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention received reports of about one human swine flu virus infection every one to two years in the U.S., but from December 2005 through February 2009, 12 cases of human infection with swine flu have been reported. Five of the 12 cases occurred in patients who had direct exposure to pigs, six in patients reported being near pigs, and the exposure in one case was unknown.

What are the symptoms of swine flu in humans?

The symptoms of swine flu in people are expected to be similar to the symptoms of regular human seasonal influenza and include fever, lethargy, lack of appetite and coughing. Some people with swine flu also have reported runny nose, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

Can people catch swine flu from eating pork?

No. Swine flu viruses are not transmitted by food. You cannot get swine flu from eating pork or pork products.

How does swine flu spread?

Influenza viruses can be directly transmitted from pigs to people and from people to pigs. Human infection with swine flu viruses are most likely to occur when people are in close proximity to infected pigs, such as in pig barns and livestock exhibits at fairs.

Human-to-human transmission of swine flu can also occur. This is thought to occur in the same way as seasonal flu occurs in people, which is mainly person-to-person transmission through coughing or sneezing of people infected with the flu virus. People may become infected by touching something with flu viruses on it and then touching their mouth or nose.

What is known about human-to-human spread of swine flu?

In September 1988, a healthy 32-year-old pregnant woman was hospitalized for pneumonia and died eight days later. A swine H1N1 flu virus was detected. Four days before getting sick, she had visited a county fair swine exhibition where there was widespread flu-like illness among the pigs.

In follow-up studies, 76 per cent of swine exhibitors tested had antibody evidence of swine flu infection but no serious illnesses were detected among this group. Additional studies suggest that one to three health care personnel who had contact with the patient developed mild influenza-like illnesses with antibody evidence of swine flu infection.

How are human infections with swine flu diagnosed?

To diagnose swine influenza A infection, a respiratory specimen is ideally collected within the first four to five days of illness and sent to the CDC for testing.

What medications are available to treat humans with swine flu?

Four antiviral drugs are licensed for use in the United States: amantadine, rimantadine, oseltamivir and zanamivir. While most swine flu viruses have been susceptible to all four drugs, the most recent seven swine flu viruses isolated from humans are resistant to amantadine and rimantadine. Right now, the CDC recommends oseltamivir or zanamivir for the treatment and/or prevention of infection with swine flu viruses.

What other examples of swine flu outbreaks are there?

The most well known outbreak of swine flu was 1976 one among soldiers in Fort Dix, N.J. The virus caused illnesses in at least four soldiers and one death; all were previously healthy. The virus was transmitted in close contact at a basic training camp. It was thought to have circulated for a month and disappeared. The source of the virus, the exact time of its introduction into Fort Dix and factors limiting its spread and duration are unknown. The outbreak may have been caused by introduction of an animal virus into a stressed human population in close contact during the winter.

Poor Workplace Climate Linked to Depression

Yo! it's real in the field. Stay focus

Study: Depression More Likely When Team Spirit Is Poor
By Bill Hendrick

Tension, backbiting, and poor team spirit at the workplace may increase the risk for depression, a new study says.

Researchers questioned a randomly selected sample of 3,347 Finnish workers aged 30-64 in 2000 and 2001.

Each person was asked to rate team climate in the workplace on a five-point scale, assigning a number to such statements as whether the atmosphere on the job was “nice and easy,” “prejudiced and conservative,” “encouraging and supportive of new ideas,” and “quarrelsome and disagreeing.”

The workers also were queried about their social lives, living arrangements, and access to health services.

Employees who felt that team spirit was poor were 61% more likely to have a depressive disorder than workers with a good team spirit, says the study, published in the journal Occupational and Environmental Medicine. And, they were 53% more likely to have used antidepressants during the first few years after they were interviewed.

During the three years of follow-up, 9% of the participants had bought antidepressant medications.

The researchers found no correlation between the climate at work and alcohol use disorders. Findings took into account factors such as age, gender, marital status, history of mental health disorders, job demands, and tenure.

“More attention should be paid to psychological factors at work,” write the researchers, led by Marjo Sinokki of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health.

10 Easy Ways to Eat "Green" Earth Day and Everyday

How to Shop for the Earth, Cook for Your Health and Bring Pleasure Back to Your Kitchen!

by Healthy Child Healthy World

Everyone's heard the cliché "you are what you eat." And, it's true - your health is intimately connected to the foods and drinks you put in your mouth. But, have you ever stopped to consider what other impacts your food choices may have? Industrial farming practices can cause soil and water pollution. Over-packaged, single-size foods result in litter and plastic waste that will linger in landfills for hundreds of years. The average American meal travels 1,500 miles from farm to fork increasing air pollution and greenhouse gases. Human health is affected by what we eat, but planetary health is affected by how we eat.

Luckily, we don't have to sacrifice either health or the environment. And, you might even find that when you start considering both and making smarter choices, your foods are more flavorful and cooking is more enjoyable. But, let's not get ahead of ourselves. Start simple by trying the easy (and affordable) tips below.

1. Eat a healthier snack like a USDA Certified organic apple. Organic certification guarantees that the product has been grown, handled and processed without synthetic pesticides, hormones, antibiotics, artificial ingredients, preservatives and without using genetic modification or irradiation. Organic certification also means the farmer is promoting biological diversity by rotating crops, conserving and renewing the soil, and protecting water sources.

Organic foods are the best investment you can make for your health, but they can cost quite a bit more. According to the Environmental Working Group, you can lower your pesticide exposure by 90 per cent simply by avoiding the most contaminated conventionally grown produce: peaches, apples, sweet bell peppers, celery, nectarines, strawberries, cherries, lettuce, imported grapes, carrots, and pears. If you're really craving one of these foods, opt for organic. Conventionally grown fruits and vegetables that have the lowest levels of pesticide residue include: onion, avocado, sweet corn, pineapple, mango, asparagus, sweet peas, kiwi, cabbage, eggplant, papaya, watermelon, broccoli, tomato, and sweet potato. You can download the EWG pocket guide that lists these and the dirty dozen from Foodnews.org.

2. Ease up on animal fats. Meat and dairy products are major sources of saturated fat in the U.S. diet, and contribute to higher risk of heart disease, cancer and diabetes. Animal products can also contain hormones, antibiotics and organochlorine chemicals, such as dioxin, DDT and other pesticides, which concentrate in animal fat. Modern meat production also consumes water, energy and land. Animal waste produces air and water pollution. And red meat production creates about 3.5 times more greenhouse gases than that of grains.

When you do buy meat, poultry or dairy, look for low fat options (get the unsaturated fats your body needs from plant sources like walnuts, flax seeds, and avocados). You can also do a favor for your body and the planet by reducing how much meat you eat. Making even one vegetarian meal a week can make a big difference.

3. Ban the can. Canned foods and beverages are lined with a resin that contains bisphenol-A, a hormone-disrupting chemical that's building up in our environment and our bodies. Most manufacturers are beginning to explore safer alternatives, but in the meantime you should choose foods that are fresh, dried or frozen or packaged in glass jars or tetra packs.

4. Select safer seafood. Eating seafood is the primary way we are exposed to methylmercury, a potent neurotoxin. Fish can also be contaminated with PCBs, which the International Agency for Research on Cancer and the Environmental Protection Agency have declared a probable carcinogen. In addition, many commercial fishing practices damage the aquatic ecosystems or depleting fish stocks to dangerous levels. Worldwide about 90% of large predatory fish stocks are already gone. Use the Environmental Defense Fund's Safe Seafood Selector to find species that are lowest in chemical and heavy metal contamination and that are fished in ways that are not harmful to our oceans.

5. Bulk up. It's common knowledge that buying in bulk saves money, but it also reduces waste because there's so much less packaging. In addition, bulk foods are often less processed so you reduce your exposure to questionable food additives. Bulk cook staples like beans and other legumes and store them in your freezer in serving sizes that are appropriate for your family size.

6. Turn on your tap. Plastic bottled water is over-priced, over packaged, and not necessarily cleaner than tap. In fact, municipal tap water is more regulated than bottled water and some bottled water is just tap water with a clever name. It's a waste of your money that creates enormous amounts of waste. According to the Natural Resources Defense Council,
"In 2006, the equivalent of 2 billion half-liter bottles of water were shipped to U.S. ports, creating thousands of tons of global warming pollution and other air pollution. And while the bottles come from far away, most of them end up close to home - in a landfill. Most bottled water comes in recyclable PET plastic bottles, but only about 13 percent of the bottles we use get recycled. In 2005, 2 million tons of plastic water bottles ended up clogging landfills instead of getting recycled."
Make an investment in a water filter and reusable stainless steel water bottles. They quickly pay for themselves. While you're at it, skip the soda and other bottled drinks. Water's much better for you.

7. Purge plastic. Okay, it's almost impossible to eliminate plastic - and sometimes there's no better choice. Still, plastics are clogging our landfills, polluting our Oceans (check out the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, 100 million tons of debris that's essentially made a trash island in the ocean), and being petroleum-based products, they create a lot of pollution when they're manufactured. In regards to human health, studies are piling up showing how chemicals leach from many plastics and end up in our food and drinks. For your food, glass is the safest bet and extremely affordable. Most second-hand stores have loads of glassware and old spaghetti or canning jars are super for storing leftovers. If you do use plastic, opt for safer ones like those with the number 2, 4, or 5 in the chasing arrows symbol (usually found on the bottom). Never heat food in plastic as it increases chemical leaching.

8. Read a food label - for real. Ever stop to read the ingredients label on packaged, processed foods? It's usually a mouthful of words most of us have a hard time pronouncing, so what exactly are you eating? You can learn which food additives are safe and which are not by visiting The Center for Science in the Public Interest's food safety guide, but it's even easier to simply choose whole foods. Whole foods are not processed, so they have all their natural nutritional gifts - and less processing means less pollution. Look for foods made from whole grains (think whole wheat bread, oatmeal and brown rice) - and it should say "whole" on the label. Make more foods from scratch (it's easier than you think). You'll end up saving money, eating healthier and reducing all the waste created from packaging and processing foods.

9. Look for local. The average mouthful of food travels 1,400 miles from the farm to our plates. Food from local farms is fresher and closer to ripeness, has used less energy for transport and is less likely to have been treated with post-harvest pesticides. Buying local products also supports regional farmers and preserves farmland. Ask for local produce, meat and dairy at your local market and see what they show you. Better yet, visit your local farmer's market. You'll be supporting your community, saving money, protecting the planet, and eating healthier. Visit EatWellGuide.org to discover your local food system.

10. Savor your flavors! When was the last time you really experienced your food? Really taken some time to appreciate what you're eating? From the crisp juiciness of a fresh apple to the creamy, cool sweetness of a spoonful of ice cream, are you really tasting what you put in your mouth or are you thoughtlessly inhaling? We've become so accustomed to fast food (whether at home or at the drive-thru), we've nearly lost the ability to appreciate our culinary bounty. When we eat without thinking, we're more apt to choose foods that are less healthy (for us and the Earth) and to overeat whatever we've slopped onto our plate (if it even made it on to a dish). Take a moment to savor the flavor, to think about where your food came from, and to feel a little gratitude.

Chavez book pick rockets up bestseller lists

Just like that, huh?

PORT OF SPAIN (AFP) – A book accusing the United States of being a neo-colonial bully in the Americas has rocketed up the sales charts, after a copy was given as a gift by Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez to US leader Barack Obama.
The book, "The Open Veins of Latin America" was given by Chavez, a longtime US critic, to Obama Saturday at an Americas summit in Trinidad and Tobago.
The English version of the tome, a well-known in leftist political circles, catapulted from 734th place to second place in just 24 hours on the online bookseller Amazon.com.
The work in its original Spanish language had an even more spectacular ascent, from 47,468th place to 283th. It also showed substantial increased sales on the website of online bookseller Barnes and Noble.
The work by Uruguayan author Eduardo Galeano is about the region's colonial past and exploitation by the world's big powers -- themes hammered constantly by Chavez, who frequently accuses the United States of "imperialist" policies.
Chavez had inscribed the book to his US counterpart with the message "For Obama, with affection."
The Venezuelan leader told reporters Saturday that "this book is a monument in our Latin American history. It allows us to learn history, and we have to build on this history."
Obama on Sunday called the gift "a nice gesture."
"I think it was, it was a nice gesture to give me a book," he said at a press conference at the conclusion of the three day summit. "I'm a reader."
Obama added that recent harsh rhetoric did not mean that the two countries could not engage in civil dialogue.
"It's unlikely that as a consequence of me shaking hands or having a polite conversation with Mr. Chavez that we are endangering the strategic interest of the United States," Obama said.
Despite its theme, the gift might have been meant as another conciliatory gesture from Chavez, whose country is a major oil exporter to the United States.
Hours after giving Obama the book, the Venezuelan leader said he was naming Roy Chaderton, Venezuela's current representative to the Organization of American States (OAS), to be his new ambassador to Washington.
The job had been open since September, when Chavez kicked out the US ambassador to Venezuela and Washington responded in kind.

4 Ways to strengthen your willpower

I really think these lessons right here can be added
in many things in life

by Brett Blumenthal

Throughout my lifetime, I think I've been able to maintain strong willpower over various things. Sometimes it was specific to diet and exercise, other times it was specific to relationships, and other times, it was specific to 'doing the right thing' even when I desperately didn't want to. That said, I have had moments where my willpower was less than stellar.

Every person has different degrees of willpower, and for that matter, different ways of fueling it to stay as strong as possible. For some it might be faith based, while for others it might be an ideology; and for others, it might be rooted in how they were raised. But what is interesting, is how willpower can be strong...very strong...in certain situations, and weak in others. As a result, I would say willpower is biased.

Take Sally for instance. She is attractive and fun, loves to socialize and has a great career. When it comes to doing things for her health, she doesn't really have a great amount of willpower: she puts off exercise and tends to indulge in unhealthy foods. When it comes to doing the chores instead of watching her favorite TV shows, she has great determination in getting the work done before even contemplating sitting in front of the TV.

To me, this is biased willpower. Wouldn't it be great if we could translate or for that matter, reallocate willpower? Here are some ideas:

Figure out What Motivates You: If you can figure out what motivates you to reach a goal or to stay resilient, you can use that as your willpower device. E.g.: If you hate to exercise, but are desperately trying to lose weight, think about how great you will look and how great you will feel.

Build up your Willpower where it is Weak: Taking an all or nothing approach to having willpower is often self-defeating. Take small steps in those areas that you feel like you have no willpower. Stay strong for something small and slowly build up to something big. Small changes over time can have a great end result. E.g., If giving up all of your favorite foods seems like a horrible quest, try cutting back one or two unhealthy foods each week.

Practice Saying No: If you can't say no to things or people, practice. The more you say no and set boundaries, the easier it gets. E.g., If you are the go-to person at work and always take on more than you can handle, start turning things/people away.

Be True to Yourself: If you are confronted with situations that are unhealthy or devaluing, but you are afraid to make a change, reach deep down and believe in your value system to guide you in making the right choice. E.g., If you are in a bad relationship that is abusive, believe in yourself and your value and use your inner strength to remove yourself from the situation.

I'm not sure any of this works, but I thought I'd throw these out there. Do you find that your willpower is biased? What do you do to muster up willpower in those areas that you need more?

Wanted: Computer hackers ... to help government

You got to keep up with the times by any means so it seems

By LOLITA C. BALDOR,

WASHINGTON – Wanted: Computer hackers.
Federal authorities aren't looking to prosecute them, but to pay them to secure the nation's networks.
General Dynamics Information Technology put out an ad last month on behalf of the Homeland Security Department seeking someone who could "think like the bad guy." Applicants, it said, must understand hackers' tools and tactics and be able to analyze Internet traffic and identify vulnerabilities in the federal systems.
In the Pentagon's budget request submitted last week, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said the Pentagon will increase the number of cyberexperts it can train each year from 80 to 250 by 2011.
With warnings that the U.S. is ill-prepared for a cyberattack, the White House conducted a 60-day study of how the government can better manage and use technology to protect everything from the electrical grid and stock markets to tax data, airline flight systems, and nuclear launch codes.
President Barack Obama appointed a former Bush administration aide, Melissa Hathaway, to head the effort, and her report was delivered Friday, the White House said.
While the country had detailed plans for floods, fires or errant planes drifting into protected airspace, there is no similar response etched out for a major computer attack.
David Powner, director of technology issues for the Government Accountability Office, told Congress last month that the U.S. has no recovery plan for a digital disaster.
"We're clearly not as prepared as we should be," he said.

YouTube Adds to Movie, TV Show Lineup

Mergers are the key.

By Ryan Nakashima

LOS ANGELES -- Google's (GOOG Quote) YouTube is expanding its library of full-length movies and TV shows it offers online, while also launching a new advertising service and adding about a dozen new content partners.
The long-form videos will be housed on a unique page at www.youtube.com/shows and get a "Shows" tab on the main YouTube site.

The offering, which went live late Thursday, marks a further departure from the fuzzy homemade clips that made the Web site popular and is the latest move in YouTube's attempt to boost sales and profits. Last week, YouTube announced it was teaming up with Universal Music Group to create an online music video venture.

"It's a first step in a long commitment," said Shiva Rajaraman, a YouTube senior product manager, in a conference call with reporters.

The company hopes to add to its movie and show content over time. The titles available at launch are mostly older fare already available elsewhere on the Web. It will offer for free hundreds of TV show titles including "Beverly Hillbillies" and "Married With Children," and hundreds of movies, including "Casino Royale" and "Cliffhanger."

The service expands on YouTube's existing partnership with several studios, whose parents include Sony(SNE Quote), Lions Gate(LGF Quote), CBS(CBS Quote), Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and Liberty Media(LINTB Quote).

On Thursday it also announced new partnerships with 13 smaller companies such as Discovery Communications(DISCA Quote), National Geographic and SnagFilms.

Advertising revenue will be shared with the content providers.

The news follows Google's earnings report Thursday in which the Internet search giant earned $1.42 billion, or $4.49 a share, in the first quarter, up 9% from a year ago.

Google bought YouTube for $1.76 billion in late 2006 but it hasn't emerged as a major marketing vehicle and the company doesn't disclose its revenue figures. Analysts have estimated its revenue in 2008 at around $200 million.

'Slumdog' filmmakers give Mumbai charity $747,000

Word money

By ERIKA KINETZ, Associated Press Writer

MUMBAI, India – The makers of the hit movie "Slumdog Millionaire" have donated $747,500 to a charity devoted to improving the lives of street children in Mumbai, the filmmakers said Thursday.
The money will be given to Plan, an international children's charity that has been working in India since 1979.
The aim is to help educate 5,000 slum kids over the next five years.
"The bottom line is that some of the beneficiaries of the film's success have got together to make a donation which will be channeled into relatively small communities where it can hopefully have a tangible and lasting impact," producer Christian Colson told The Associated Press by e-mail.
"Slumdog Millionaire," a rags-to-riches tale of a slum kid who makes it big, won eight Oscars and has grossed more than $300 million worldwide.
Some criticized the filmmakers for failing to share those riches with Mumbai's millions of slum dwellers. Others accused them of exploiting two of the movie's child stars, Rubina Ali and Azharuddin Mohammed Ismail, who grew up in a wretched Mumbai slum just minutes from a posh Bollywood enclave.
The filmmakers' initial efforts to help the families of Rubina, 9, and Azharuddin, 10, were thwarted by excessive media attention, the changing demands of family members and the runaway success of the film.
Sudden fame and relative fortune sowed resentment in the families of the child stars and complicated relations with their neighbors.
The filmmakers feared that if they gave the families a lump sum up front the money would be squandered or extorted.
The filmmakers said Thursday they have appointed three trustees with long experience in social services to manage a trust fund for the two children. They said the children can tap the trust funds after they graduate from high school.
The Jai Ho Trust aims to ensure that the pair will get a good education, adequate housing and social support, the filmmakers said. They did not disclose the amount of the trust fund.
