Walking Backward May Sharpen Thinking

You never know

Facing a Challenge? Backing Yourself Out of It -- Literally -- May Help

By Miranda Hitti
WebMD Health News Reviewed by Louise Chang, MD

The next time you're facing a challenge, you might not want to stand your ground. Maybe you should try walking backward instead, Dutch researchers suggest.

"Whenever you encounter a difficult situation, stepping backward may boost your capability to deal with it effectively," Severine Koch, PhD, and colleagues write in May's edition of Psychological Science.

Koch's team works for the social and cultural psychology department at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands.

They were interested in the effects that "approach" movements, like walking toward something or pulling something toward you, and "avoidance" movements, such backing away from something, have on mental functioning.

The researchers reasoned that the body and mind are on higher alert when they're in avoidance mode. So they put that theory to the test by studying 38 students at Radboud University Nijmegen.

Each student took word tests in which they read a color word -- like red -- that was sometimes displayed in matching ink (like "red" written in red ink) and sometimes shown in another color (like "red" written in blue ink).

The students had to name, as quickly as possible, the color of the ink. And, they had to do that while walking forward, backward, or stepping sideways.

When the test was easy -- and the color names and inks matched -- reaction times for correct answers were just as good while the students walked forward, backward, or sideways.

But when the test was tough -- and the color names and inks clashed -- reaction times for correct answers were quickest while walking backward. Reaction times while walking forward or stepping sideways were similar.

Based on the reaction time advantage, Koch and colleagues write that "backward locomotion appears to be a very powerful trigger to mobilize cognitive resource."

But do look to see where you're going -- safety first.

PANDORUM

Damn, the movie poster is CRAZY!!! Heads taking it up a notch with promotions!!!

From the producers of the Resident Evil film franchise comes Pandorum, a terrifying thriller in which two crew members wake up on an abandoned spacecraft with no idea who they are, how long they've been asleep, or what their mission is. The two soon discover they're actually not alone -- and the reality of their situation is more horrifying than they could have imagined.

Why Your Business Needs a Social Media Manager

if your that person in your own business and you got the time. You can easily be that person in somebody else business and get paid for it.

The benefits of having a social media manager in today’s connected world are great. Not only do social media managers maintain a business’s positive reputation within the online community, but they also have the power to oversee updates of both the company and its followers, acting as a go-between. Here are six reasons why you should consider hiring a social media manager.

You’ve already got one. Most companies already have an employee who’s a social networking wiz. By hiring within the company, you’ll be able to save time and money, and you’ll have an employee who is already familiar with the daily activities and mission of your business.

They’re dedicated. If you have identified your social media expert, they have probably already displayed a high level of consistency and steadfastness. Having them apply their skills to your business’s social networks will attract many more fans and followers, further popularizing your business and keeping it top of mind.

It’s a low-cost endeavor. Not only will this be a fun and entertaining position, but the cost of having a social network media manager should be low. You could even delegate this job to an intern or a public relations hire fresh out of college.

They make connections. Many people already use social media tools for the purpose of making business connections and working the virtual room. By having a dedicated employee on the job, you’ll never miss an opportunity to make an important connection. You never know where your next business deal may come from.

They keep things current. Utilizing the power of social networks is a big undertaking -- a social media manager must constantly give updates, furnish responses, and look for new opportunities and prospects to remain relevant. By filling this position, your company will always be current and up-to-date, thus keeping your eager audience returning for more.

They’re always ready. With a dedicated moderator and the ability of anyone to access the network from almost anywhere, you’re never far from making new connections or letting everyone know that something big is about to happen. Conversely, if something goes wrong, this person will be able to respond quickly and put out the fire.
Here are five job duties your social media manager should fill:

Monitoring: The number-one duty for a social media manager is to make sure there are no fake accounts created with your company’s name and to spot malicious users looking to degrade your company’s reputation with negative posts, pictures, video, or other media. Although the networks should be a place to freely comment and share information and ideas, it shouldn’t turn into a place that is hurtful to either the business or other users. Before hiring, make a list of what is and isn’t acceptable, then go over it with your social media manager.

Making announcements: Popular social networking Web sites like Twitter have allowed anyone to turn their computer into their very own PR agent and post their “press releases” for the world to see. That is exactly what your new social media manager should be doing. What better way to make an announcement of an upcoming sale or newly in-stock item to the public?

Communicating: Being involved with social networking is like having a huge party in which you’re able to spend time with everyone no matter how big it gets. Your newly hired advisor can now answer frequently asked customer questions, give advice on popular topics, express concerns over issues plaguing users, or just chitchat on the day’s news. Having a dedicated person there to fulfill a client’s needs will go a long way.

Building and recruiting: Another one of your new manager’s duties will be to gain fans by searching various communities. By recruiting followers, you’ll be getting customers that you might have never noticed, along with fresh demographic data. What’s more, by making connections with other people in your industry -- even at competing companies -- you’re one step closer to landing top talent if they get laid off.

Updating features: There are many useful and fun ways to engage people on a social network. Games, quizzes, and puzzles are only a few of the many popular applications out there. With a dedicated manager implementing these onto your company’s network page, visitors will find the site useful and entertaining and will want to return. These days, there’s nothing worse than stale Web pages.

The Baader Meinhof Complex

Wow, gotta peep this also

Germany in the 1970s: Murderous bomb attacks, the threat of terrorism and the fear of the enemy inside are rocking the very foundations of the still fragile German democracy. The radicalized children of the Nazi generation led by Andreas Baader (Moritz Bleibtreu), Ulrike Meinhof (Martina Gedeck) and Gudrun Ensslin (Johanna Wokalek) are fighting a violent war against what they perceive as the new face of fascism: American imperialism supported by the German establishment, many of whom have a Nazi past. Their aim is to create a more human society but by employing inhuman means they not only spread terror and bloodshed, they also lose their own humanity. The man who understands them is also their hunter: the head of the German police force Horst Herold (Bruno Ganz). And while he succeeds in his relentless pursuit of the young terrorists, he knows hes only dealing with the tip of the iceberg.

Art & Copy (2009)

Damn, this movie is right up the brother alley!!!

Got creativity? Got manipulation? Got art? Advertising’s profound effect on modern culture is unquestionable. Art & Copy takes us inside a powerful, yet surprisingly unknown, industry to reveal the most influential creative forces tapping the zeitgeist of our time. Think of those commercials we can never seem to get out of our heads. Each one is the brain child of an industry typically associated with pandering and manipulation. Is great advertising actually a rare and rebellious accomplishment more akin to—dare I say it—art?Beginning in the 1960s, a creative revolution revitalized the advertising industry. Bill Bernbach launched the Volkswagen Beetle, prompting viewers to “think small.” Dan Wieden coined “Just Do It” and forever changed the way we motivate ourselves athletically. Phyllis Robinson empowered the “me generation” with a Clairol tagline. Hal Riney all but insured Reagan’s reelection with heart-tugging TV ads. Mary Wells Lawrence reinvented the big bad apple via her “I love NY” campaign. George Lois gave Tommy Hilfiger the makeover of a lifetime, while Cliff Freeman wondered “Where’s the beef?” and Jeff Goodby and Rich Silverstein asked, “Got Milk?” Renowned documentary filmmaker Doug Pray (Scratch, Surfwise) intermingles dazzling footage of TV satellites being launched and billboards being erected with some of the most remarkable ad campaigns of all time. Like the talented subjects he profiles, Pray creates a rousing synthesis of art, commerce, and human emotion.

Along with her brother Hernan Barangan, Mrs. Grillos started Hambone Designs, after her full-time contract position with Williams-Sonoma as a production manager wasn’t renewed in January. The new company makes bicycle bags that hold things like keys, wallets and cellphones.

“You have the time — why not focus your energy on something, rather than just trolling Craigslist and sitting and watching TV?” Mrs. Grillos says. “It’s really taking matters in my own hands.”

Mrs. Grillos, 34, built a Web site called hambonedesigns.com, opened a virtual shop on Etsy.com, an online marketplace, and hit San Francisco street fairs. So far, between the online marketing and the street fairs, she and her brother have sold 70 bags, which retail for $20 to $40. Each sale results in a profit.

“We have been talking about mass producing, but we’re not there yet,” Mrs. Grillos says. “It is a whole other thing, approaching stores and having the inventory.”

Ramadan, the Month of Fasting

The Meaning of Ramadan
Ramadan is a special month of the year for over one billion Muslims throughout the world. It is a time for inner reflection, devotion to God, and self-control. Muslims think of it as a kind of tune-up for their spiritual lives. There are as many meanings of Ramadan as there are Muslims.

The third "pillar" or religious obligation of Islam, fasting has many special benefits. Among these, the most important is that it is a means of learning self-control. Due to the lack of preoccupation with the satisfaction of bodily appetites during the daylight hours of fasting, a measure of ascendancy is given to one's spiritual nature, which becomes a means of coming closer to God. Ramadan is also a time of intensive worship, reading of the Qur'an, giving charity, purifying one's behavior, and doing good deeds.

As a secondary goal, fasting is a way of experiencing hunger and developing sympathy for the less fortunate, and learning to thankfulness and appreciation for all of God's bounties. Fasting is also beneficial to the health and provides a break in the cycle of rigid habits or overindulgence.

Who Fasts in Ramadan?
While voluntary fasting is recommended for Muslims, during Ramadan fasting becomes obligatory. Sick people, travelers, and women in certain conditions are exempted from the fast but must make it up as they are able. Perhaps fasting in Ramadan is the most widely practiced of all the Muslim forms of worship.

The Sighting of the Moon
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar. The much-anticipated start of the month is based on a combination of physical sightings of the moon and astronomical calculations. The practice varies from place to place, some places relying heavily on sighting reports and others totally on calculations. In the United States, most communities follow the decision of the Islamic Society of North America, which accepts bonafide sightings of the new moon anywhere in the United States as the start of the new month. The end of the month, marked by the celebration of 'Eid-ul-Fitr, is similarly determined.

From Dawn to Sunset
The daily period of fasting starts at the breaking of dawn and ends at the setting of the sun. In between -- that is, during the daylight hours -- Muslims totally abstain from food, drink, smoking, and marital sex. The usual practice is to have a pre-fast meal (suhoor) before dawn and a post-fast meal (iftar) after sunset.

The Islamic lunar calendar, being 11 to 12 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar, migrates throughout the seasons. Thus, since Ramadan begins on August 21 or 22 this year, next year it will begin on August 10 or 11. The entire cycle takes around 35 years. In this way, the length of the day, and thus the fasting period, varies in length from place to place over the years. Every Muslim, no matter where he or she lives, will see an average Ramadan day of the approximately 13.5 hours.

Devotion to God
The last ten days of Ramadan are a time of special spiritual power as everyone tries to come closer to God through devotions and good deeds. The night on which the first verses of the Qur'an were revealed to the Prophet, known as the Night of Power (Lailat ul-Qadr), is generally taken to be the 27th night of the month. The Qur'an states that this night is better than a thousand months. Therefore many Muslims spend the entire night in prayer.

During the month, Muslims try to read as much of the Qur'an as they can. Most try to read the whole book at least once. Some spend part of their day listening to the recitation of the Qur'an in a mosque.

Food in Ramadan
Since Ramadan is a special time, Muslims in many parts of the world prepare certain favorite foods during this month.

It is a common practice for Muslims to break their fast at sunset with dates (iftar), following the custom of Prophet Muhammad. This is followed by the sunset prayer, which is followed by dinner. Since Ramadan emphasizes community aspects and since everyone eats dinner at the same time, Muslims often invite one another to share in the Ramadan evening meal.

Some Muslims find that they eat less for dinner during Ramadan than at other times due to stomach contraction. However, as a rule, most Muslims experience little fatigue during the day since the body becomes used to the altered routine during the first week of Ramadan.

The Spirit of Ramadan
Muslims use many phrases in various languages to congratulate one another for the completion of the obligation of fasting and the 'Eid-ul-Fitr festival. Here is a sampling of them:

"Kullu am wa antum bi-khair" (May you be well throughout the year) - Arabic
"Atyab at-tihani bi-munasabat hulul shahru Ramadan al-Mubarak" (The most precious congratulations on the occasion of the coming of Ramadan) - Arabic

"Elveda, ey Ramazan" (Farewell, O Ramadan) - Turkish

"Kullu am wa antum bi-khair" (May you be well throughout the year) - Arabic

"'Eid mubarak (A Blessed 'Eid)" - universal

U.S. Supreme Court orders new hearing for Troy Davis

Condemned killer on death row for murder of off-duty police officer
By Bill Rankin
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Georgia death-row inmate Troy Anthony Davis has long insisted that, given another day in court, he could prove he did not kill a Savannah police officer 20 years ago.

On Monday, in an extraordinary order unlike any it has issued in almost half a century, the U.S. Supreme Court gave Davis such a chance.

The high court ordered a federal judge in the Southern District of Georgia to hear testimony that could not have been obtained at the time of Davis’ 1991 trial and decide whether this new evidence “clearly establishes” his innocence in the death of Officer Mark Allen MacPhail.

Davis’ sister, Martina Correia, said she was overjoyed.

“Finally, it’s going to happen,” she said. “I know that a lot of people still think Troy is guilty. But I know that executing him will not bring justice for Officer MacPhail. I truly believe Troy is innocent.”

The slain officer’s mother, Anneliese MacPhail, was in shock.

“I was really hoping they’d deny this appeal, not just shove it off to somewhere else,” she said, noting Wednesday is the 20th anniversary of her son’s death. “I would like it to come to an end.”

As for Davis, she said, “If you tell yourself for 20 years you didn’t do it, you start to believe it. I’m still convinced he did it.”

The high court’s decision gave yet another reprieve to Davis, whose life already had been spared three times shortly before his scheduled execution. If the court had rejected Davis’ latest request, the Chatham County district attorney was expected to seek a new execution date.

Davis’ innocence claims have attracted international attention and support. Former President Jimmy Carter and Pope Benedict XVI have said Davis should not be executed. In May, 27 former justices, judges and prosecutors filed a legal brief asking the high court to let a federal judge hear Davis’ claims.

Davis sits on death row for the 1989 killing of MacPhail, who was off-duty. MacPhail, 27, was shot multiple times after he responded to the wails of a homeless man being pistol-whipped in a Burger King parking lot.

Since the 1991 trial, seven of nine key prosecution witnesses have recanted their testimony. This includes recantations from witnesses who testified they saw Davis shoot and kill MacPhail.

Others have come forward and said another man, Sylvester “Redd” Coles, has admitted to them he was the killer. Coles, who denied shooting MacPhail, was at the scene and the first person to implicate Davis.

In Monday’s decision, Justice John Paul Stevens noted that no state or federal court has convened a hearing and heard the new testimony and assessed its reliability. “The substantial risk of putting an innocent man to death clearly provides an adequate justification for holding an evidentiary hearing,” Stevens wrote. He was joined by Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer.

Justice Antonin Scalia, joined by Justice Clarence Thomas, issued a vigorous dissent. He noted that the Georgia Supreme Court, the state Board of Pardons and Paroles and the federal appeals court in Atlanta already reviewed and rejected Davis’ claims of innocence.

The high court, Scalia said, is ordering a hearing that is “a fool’s errand” because Davis’ claim is “a sure loser.”

“Transferring his petition to the district court is a confusing exercise that can serve no purpose except to delay the state’s execution of its lawful criminal judgment,” Scalia said.

The decision noted that the court’s newest justice, Sonia Sotomayor, did not participate in it. Nor did the decision indicate how Chief Justice John Roberts and Justices Anthony Kennedy and Samuel Alito voted. But at least two of them must have voted to grant Davis’ request because a five-vote majority was needed for it to prevail.

The court also did not assign the case to a specific judge. Davis’ federal appeal was previously denied by a senior judge who has since passed away. Once the case is formally transferred to the federal courthouse in Savannah, it will likely be assigned to either Chief Judge William T. Moore Jr. or Senior Judge B. Avant Edenfield, the clerk of court, Scott Poff, said Monday.

Davis’ federal appeal was stifled by the federal Antiterrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996, passed by Congress to streamline appeals. The statute makes it extremely difficult for death-row inmates to present new evidence.

In Monday’s order, the high court did not specify what new evidence could be presented at the upcoming hearing.

Stephen Bright of the Southern Center for Human Rights in Atlanta noted that the order shifts the burden of proof onto Davis to show he was innocent. “That’s a much more difficult proposition,” Bright said. “It doesn’t mean it can’t be done, but it’s a significant burden to overcome.”

New York attorney George Kendall, who also litigates death-penalty cases, said a key victory for Davis is that a judge can finally hear the testimony in open court, look the witnesses in the eyes, gauge their credibility and decide if Davis’ claims have merit. To date, the recantation testimony has been presented in sworn affidavits by the state’s witnesses who say police, intent on getting Davis, intimidated them into implicating him. Some of the witnesses also have testified in closed hearings before the state parole board.

“If Troy Davis can persuade a district court judge that his witnesses are credible, that enough of the recantations ring true and there may be reason to believe the other guy was the real killer, I think he’s got a shot at getting relief,” Kendall said. “If he can’t do that, he’s got no shot.”

Tom Dunn, one of Davis’ attorneys, said, “Although the burden we face is high, we are confident in Mr. Davis’ innocence and our evidence.”

Cornell University law professor John Blume said Monday’s decision could indicate the high court may be ready to set a new precedent.

“This could be an important first step toward the court’s recognition that it is unconstitutional to incarcerate or execute someone who is actually innocent,” Blume said. “People might be surprised by that, but the court has never recognized it.”

Scalia, who noted it had been almost 50 years since the high court took the action it took on Monday, made note that the court “has never held that the Constitution forbids the execution of a convicted defendant” who later convinced the courts he is “‘actually’ innocent.”

But Stevens responded by citing a dissent by Judge Rosemary Barkett of the federal appeals court in Atlanta, who in April said Davis’ new claims should be presented in open court. It “would be an atrocious violation of our Constitution and the principles upon which it is based” to execute an innocent person, Stevens wrote.

WHAT THE JUSTICES SAID

Justice John Paul Stevens, joined by Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Stephen Breyer: “The substantial risk of putting an innocent man to death clearly provides an adequate justification for holding an evidentiary hearing. ... Imagine a petitioner in Davis’ situation who possesses new evidence conclusively and definitively proving, beyond any scintilla of doubt, that he is an innocent man. The dissent’s reasoning would allow such a petitioner to be put to death nonetheless.”
Justice Antonin Scalia, joined by Justice Clarence Thomas: “The court proceeds down this path even though every judicial and executive body that has examined petitioner’s stale claim of innocence has been unpersuaded, and (to make matters worse) even though it would be impossible for the District Court to grant relief. ... Today, without explanation and without any meaningful guidance, this court sends the District Court for the Southern District of Georgia on a fool’s errand.”

Scientists find rare gene behind short sleepers

Man, I might have this for real. I guess every artist might be screaming that also. Whoa!!

By LAURAN NEERGAARD, AP Medical Writer

It's believed to be a very rare mutation, not an excuse for the rest of us who stay up too late. But the finding, published in Friday's edition of the journal Science, offers a new lead to study how sleep affects health.

The National Institutes of Health says adults need seven hours to nine hours of sleep for good health. Regularly getting too little increases the risk of health problems, including memory impairment and a weakened immune system. A major 2006 study estimated that as many as 30 million Americans suffer chronic insomnia, and millions more have other sleep disorders, including sleep apnea.

University of California, San Francisco, researchers have long hunted genes related to how and when people sleep. In 2001, they discovered a mutation that puts its carriers' sleep patterns out of whack: These people regularly go to bed around 7:30 p.m. and wake around 3:30 a.m.

Now the same team has found a gene involved in regulating length of sleep. In one family, the 69-year-old mother and her 44-year-old daughter typically go to bed around 10 p.m., and Mom rises around 4 and her daughter around 4:30, with no apparent ill effects. The rest of the family has typical sleep patterns.

Blood tests showed the women harbored a mutation in a gene named DEC2 that's involved in regulation of circadian rhythms, the body's clock. A check of more than 250 stored DNA samples didn't find another carrier.

Then lead researcher Ying-Hui Fu, a neurology professor, and colleagues bred mice and fruit flies that carried the mutation. Sure enough, the flies' activity and brain-wave measurements on the mice showed those with the mutation slept less — and the mice needed less time to recover from sleep deprivation.

The result: A model that "provides a unique opportunity" to study the effects of different amounts of sleep, Fu concluded.

Vick signs deal with Eagles

By ROB MAADDI AP Sports Writer

PHILADELPHIA(AP)—By halftime, the Linc was buzzing: Michael Vick(notes) was an Eagle.

Suddenly, no one seemed to care much about the preseason game against the New England Patriots on Thursday night. All that mattered to most fans was that the disgraced quarterback had joined their team.

Agent Joel Segal confirmed the signing, shortly before the Philadelphia Eagles announced it in a text message. The team gave Vick a one-year deal with an option for a second year.

“We don’t need another quarterback, especially him,” longtime fan Donald Crispin said.

The 29-year-old Vick, once the NFL’s highest-paid player, has been out of action since 2006. The former Atlanta Falcons star was convicted in August 2007 of conspiracy and running a dogfighting ring, and served 18 of a 23-month sentence in federal prison. He also was suspended indefinitely by the NFL.

Commissioner Roger Goodell conditionally lifted Vick’s suspension on July 27, allowing him to sign with a team, practice and play in the last two preseason games. Once the season begins, Vick can participate in all team activities except games, and Goodell said he would consider Vick for full reinstatement by Week 6 (Oct. 18-19) at the latest.

The Eagles reached the NFC championship game last season under quarterback Donovan McNabb(notes), and are still looking for their elusive first Super Bowl win.

McNabb has led the Eagles to five NFC championship games and one Super Bowl appearance in the last eight years, and was rewarded with a $5.3 million raise in the offseason. The Eagles tore up his old contract with two years remaining, and gave him a new deal worth $24.5 million over the next two seasons.

The team is a surprise landing point for Vick. It was among 26 clubs that said there was no interest in him, but that may have changed when backup Kevin Kolb(notes) strained a knee ligament earlier this week. Kolb’s injury isn’t serious and he’s expected to return next week. The Eagles also have veteran A.J. Feeley(notes).

When news of Vick’s signing circulated in the press box during the first half of the Eagles’ preseason opener against New England, even the team’s public relations staff seemed surprised.

The crowd quickly caught on at Lincoln Financial Field. Fans standing on the concourse were in disbelief. One guy wondered how quickly he’d be able to buy a Vick jersey. Another asked if this was a joke.

“It doesn’t make any sense,” said Michelle Harlan, a mother attending her first NFL game with a young son.

In a “60 Minutes” interview set to air Sunday, Vick accepted blame for not stopping the illegal dogfighting operation he bankrolled.

Vick said he feels “some tremendous hurt behind what happened.”

He said he should have taken “the initiative to stop it all … I didn’t.”

Asked if he was more concerned about his playing career or the dogs he hurt, Vick replied, “Football don’t even matter.”

The animal rights group, People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, wasted no time reminding people exactly what Vick had done.

“PETA and millions of decent football fans around the world are disappointed that the Eagles decided to sign a guy who hung dogs from trees. He electrocuted them with jumper cables and held them under water,” PETA spokesman Dan Shannon told The Associated Press.

“You have to wonder what sort of message this sends to young fans who care about animals and don’t want them to be harmed.”

Since Andy Reid became the head coach in 1999, the Eagles have avoided players with character issues. The lone exception came in 2004 when Philadelphia acquired wide receiver Terrell Owens(notes). That move paid off when Owens helped lead the Eagles to the Super Bowl in his first season. But T.O. quickly wore out his welcome, criticizing management over a contract dispute and feuding with McNabb. He was released midway through the 2005 season.

“I couldn’t envision Mike being here,” said former Eagles linebacker Ike Reese(notes), a teammate of Vick’s in Atlanta in 2005-06. “I didn’t see where he fit in. I think most people in the locker room would accept it. Donovan is very secure in his position. He wants to see Mike get another opportunity.”

8 Power Foods to Protect Your Health

Word up. We got to protect our health during that daily hustle for real

By Lucy Danziger, SELF Editor-in-Chief -

Here's some food for thought: You can eat your way to better health. Sure, if you fill your plate with fruit, veggies, whole grains and lean protein, you'll slim down. But certain menu options pack more nutritional punch than others and some have downright super powers when it comes to staving off cancer and other diseases. Help yourself to a few of my favorite health-boosting bites and learn why choosing these can help you live a longer, stronger, happier life.

POWER FOOD: Cherries
Way more than just pie filler, cherries are the piece de resistance of the fruit world. They have more flavonoids, aka powerful antioxidants, than almost any other food analyzed by the USDA. Cherries, both sweet and tart, are particularly rich in anthocyanins, micronutrients that may jump-start the immune system and mop up disease-causing free radicals. What this means: They may have the ability to ward off cancer. Other research suggests they may also reduce inflammation associated with arthritis and gout.

TRY THEM: Fresh cherries are ripe now (the season runs from May through August), but frozen and dried versions are equally nutritious. Toss a fresh bag into the freezer for a sweet, cool treat; add tart dried cherries to salads; or try topping pancakes with the canned, no-syrup-added kind.

POWER FOOD: Black tea
You don't always have to go green: Black tea, the type in your basic bag, may offer similar protection from heart disease and some cancers as its highly-praised cousin; people with heart disease who drank it daily for a month saw a 50 percent improvement in the functioning of impaired blood vessels, a study from Boston University reports. And another study, from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, found that a compound in black tea triggers colorectal cancer cells to destroy themselves.

TRY IT: Sip it hot at breakfast or cool down with an iced version at lunch. To brew your own, use boiling water and steep for three minutes to get the most antioxidants. Worth noting: Decaf varieties are lower in antioxidants, while bottled and instant teas have barely detectable levels. Instead, make it yourself and drink it fresh--time in the refrigerator depletes tea's powers.

POWER FOOD: Celery
This traditional diet staple is a great source of potassium, a nutrient that helps reduce blood pressure and regulate the balance of fluids and minerals in the body. Most Americans get less than 50 percent of the suggested 4,700 milligrams a day. People usually use bananas as their go-to potassium source, but four medium stalks of celery deliver about the same amount of potassium as a 105-calorie banana for a mere 24 calories. The crunchy crudite also contains compounds called phthalides, which moderate blood pressure, too.

TRY IT: For a quick, healthy snack, stash precut celery sticks immersed in a tub of ice water in the fridge (the cool bath keeps them at their crunchiest). Dip in hummus for an extra dose of fiber. Add celery to soups, stews and stir-fries.

POWER FOOD: Quinoa
This grainlike seed (pronounced "keen-wah") is as close as you can get to a perfect food, because it provides almost all the nutrients a body needs. Quinoa delivers significant amounts of 20 different amino acids your body uses to maintain and repair tissues, including all of the essential amino acids--protein building blocks your body can't make and has to get from food. (Only animal protein can make the same claim, and it's usually higher in calories and fat than quinoa.) It's also a great source of magnesium, which helps regulate blood pressure. A half cup gives you more than 50 percent of your daily needs, as well as some iron and potassium.

TRY IT: Boiled quinoa is a nice alternative to brown rice. (Slightly undercook it, or it will get mushy). You can also eat quinoa like oatmeal, with milk and maple syrup.

POWER FOOD: Mushrooms
They're low in calories and are a top plant source of B-complex vitamins, including riboflavin, which helps keep skin healthy and eyesight sharp. They also leave other produce in the dust when it comes to selenium, an antioxidant that may protect against some cancers. And according to a study from researchers at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, mushrooms contain betaglucan and chitin, two types of fiber that absorb fat and whisk it out of the blood, lowering your risk for heart disease. All mushrooms offer benefits, but the big winner is the meaty portobello. It's high in selenium and potassium.

TRY THEM: Pop portobellos on the grill this summer and cook them as you would a burger. You can also mix any type into salads, or saute and add to pizza.

POWER FOOD: Pomegranate juice
Presqueezed pomegranate juice offers almost all the health perks of the whole fruit without the hassle (seeds to dig out, red-stained fingers!). The beverage has more antioxidants than red wine, green tea, cranberry juice and orange juice and is loaded with polyphenols, a type of antioxidant that may protect against cancer and promote heart health. In one study in the journal Clinical Nutrition, people with carotid-artery disease, which can lead to stroke, reversed some artery damage by drinking a little less than 2 ounces daily.

TRY IT: To balance the flavor and reduce calories, mix with an equal amount of seltzer or freshly brewed tea.

POWER FOOD: Sunflower seeds
With 25 percent more vitamin E than almonds, sunflower seeds are the new go-to snack for reducing the risk for heart disease and stroke. Vitamin E may also fight inflammation, which can lead to joint pain and cartilage deterioration. Only 4 tablespoons of dried seeds provide 12 milligrams of vitamin E--that's 80 percent of your daily needs. They're also full of fiber, healthy fats, protein and iron. Make sure to choose the unsalted type--the salted version may taste great, but they're higher in sodium.

TRY THEM: Shelled seeds are great tossed into salads, baked goods such as muffins or spice cake, meat loaf or any recipe that calls for nuts. You can also crush them, add some olive oil and use them as a coating for baked chicken or fish fillets.

POWER FOOD: Whole-grain cereal
No need to think outside the box: Many brands of breakfast cereal are loaded with filling fiber, which will help you head off a midmorning trip to the vending machine. Some even boast health claims: Shredded wheat, for example, is made from whole grains, which may lower cholesterol and reduce your heart disease risk. With about 250 calories (including lowfat milk) and only a few grams of fat, a bowlful also gives you an energy lift from the mix of good carbs and lean protein (when you add the milk). Note: Only whole-grain cereals offer these benefits.

TRY IT: Choose types with at least 4 grams of fiber and no more than 6 g sugar per serving--I love steel cut oatmeal--and check serving size to make sure you keep calories in check. Then pour a bowl for breakfast, a snack or even dinner.

Narcolepsy Symptoms

You got to know the haps

Narcolepsy Overview

Narcolepsy is a sleep disorder that causes overwhelming and severe daytime sleepiness that often occurs at inappropriate times and places. The daytime sleep attacks may occur with or without warning, and can occur repeatedly in a single day. Persons with narcolepsy often have fragmented nighttime sleep with frequent brief awakenings.

Narcolepsy is typically characterized by the following 4 symptoms with varying frequencies:

Excessive daytime sleepiness (90%)

Cataplexy (sudden and temporary loss of muscle tone often triggered by emotions such as laughter) (75%)

Hallucinations (vivid dreamlike experiences that occur while falling asleep or upon awakening) (30%)

Sleep paralysis (paralysis that occurs most often upon falling asleep or waking up; the person is unable to move for a few minutes) (25%)
Less frequently persons have all four symptoms (15%).

The following are some little known facts about narcolepsy:

Frequently, narcolepsy is unrecognized for many years. There could be a delay of 10 years between the onset of the condition and the diagnosis.

Approximately 50% of adults with narcolepsy retrospectively report symptoms beginning in their teenage years. For most patients, narcolepsy begins between the ages of 15 and 30 years. It less frequently occurs in children younger than age 10 years (6%).

Narcolepsy may lead to impairment of social and academic performance in otherwise intellectually normal children.

Narcolepsy is a treatable condition. A multi-modal approach is most effective (medications, a regular nighttime sleep schedule, and scheduled naps during the day) is required for the most favorable outcome.
